Clean Your Gutters to Save Your Roof

Clogged gutters can threaten the integrity of your roof and even your home if you are not careful and diligent about cleaning out your gutters. The hassle of clogged gutters is a common problem for Texas homeowners. One strong storm can clog even new gutters with soggy leaves, stems, and sticks.

gutter clogged with leavesGutter clogs can damage your roof.

Why gutter maintenance is important

Tapia’s Roofing recommends that you clean your gutters regularly. Here are a few of the reasons why we do:

  • Dirty gutters are ugly
  • Organic material stinks when it rots
  • Overflow can be visible from the street
  • Organic material can stain your roof and siding or brick

Even more important than the reason stated above, clogged gutters can actually damage your roof and home. If your gutters fill up to a point where water back up onto your roof water can seep under the shingles or shingle tiles resulting is water damage to your home. With regularly scheduled gutter maintenance you can save yourself some real dough by preventing water damage.

Furthermore, if organic material is allowed to build up for a considerable amount of time it can attract all kinds of insects, like termites, cockroaches, spiders, and bees. Regularly cleaning out gutters can save you thousands in exterminations costs.

Also, if your gutters are severely clogged the weight of the standing water can actually cause the gutters to collapse. If your gutters collapse, you will have to have all new gutters installed. You can expect when gutters crash to the ground that they will be bent or damaged beyond repair.

Cleaning your gutters isn’t a job that you should attempt to do by yourself because climbing ladders without the right training can be a dangerous endeavor. If you do decide to clean your gutters on your own, we encourage you to use caution and use the proper safety equipment. While cleaning your gutters, if you see that your roof needs repairs contact Tapia’s Roofing for free roofing inspection.

Roof Ventilation, Is It Important?

A hole in your roof is a bad thing, right? That is what you may think, but you need holes in your roofing system.

Let me explain:

I am not talking about gaping holes that allow bugs and rain to pour in, but I am referring to vents that are built into your attic so that your roof breathe, aka ventilation.

The reason you need roof ventilation is apparent for most people to understand. Allowing your attic to breathe allows trapped heat to escape your attic, preventing your attic from feeling like a blast furnace. Without correct ventilation, your home will be hotter and much harder to cool. The consequence of poor attic ventilation:

  • Energy bills will increase
  • Home will be less energy efficient
  • A/C unit will work hard (more repairs)
  • Roofing shingles will deteriorate faster

A roof is ventilated correctly when heat is allowed to escape the attic, and colder air can be pulled in. By installing vents and either the peak of the roof or at the height of the gables at the end of the structure, heat has a way to egress, at the highest point.

As the warmer air escapes the attic, it sucks or pulls colder air from the lower parts of the attic. The colder air flows into the attic through the soffits, a series of vents on the underside of the roof.

To remove moister, withstanding the harsh elements of nature and provide a long-term weather barrier, a roof must be able to breathe.
One of the most critical factors for cooling your home is proper roof ventilation. If your attic doesn’t have some measure of airflow, it will become hot and muggy. That warm and humid air can lead to condensation, which leads to mold. This mold and moister will not only rot your roof plywood, but it can also be damaging to your health.

The next time you need a roof replacement or repair, you could be in for a surprise if you learn that you have rotten rafters and plywood. Wood rot would lead to more costly repairs.

With Houston’s unusually warm and humid climate proper roof ventilation is vitally important. There is some option that can help boost your ventilation to help keep your attic cooler and drier, like adding some different vents and fans.

Proper roof ventilation will keep your home cooler, make your roof last longer, and save you money on your electric bills.

Call Tapia’s Roofing Company to make sure you have proper roof ventilation.

Mobile Home Roof Material Options

There are several different types of roofing materials for your mobile home. Some of these methods include:

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are sometimes used as the roofing material on mobile homes. If you have an asphalt shingle roof that needs to be replaced, you will need to remove all of them and replace them.

Aluminum
Aluminum cannot be used alone, but instead works with another material that functions as an insulating layer. Aluminum is lightweight, which may seem ideal for a mobile home or trailers, but it doesn’t offer the insulation and energy efficiency many people would prefer in their home. There are also other metal roofing options like tin, steal, and corrugated metal.

Additionally, even a small amount of damage will require replacing whole aluminum sheets, which can become costly.

TPO
TPO is a material that is flexible and easy to install. It is white, which is optimal for energy efficiency, and it is relatively cheap. Additionally, the installation is even lower in cost since different seam widths are available. TPO is lightweight and extremely durable also in all types of weather situations.

Your type of house and chimney design is also a key factor when considering a chimney tear down. Removing a brick chimney on an exterior wall may not be possible since the fireplace is part of the structure. Removing an interior brick chimney usually isn’t load bearing, thus can be demolished.

You need to protect your home. Consider hanging plastic from the ceiling to reduce dust distribution and contain the debris. Try to create an enclosed work area with plastic sheeting and tape.

Take it apart brick-by-brick. You can use a hammer and chisel for the smaller stuff and a mini-impact hammer to speed through the rest.

You may need to cut/remove ties to framing members as you go through the floor.

New plywood installed to patch the hole.

Remember you will still need to patch the roof as you tear down the chimney stack. Cost and time can rapidly increase when you consider how to finish the roof repairs after the chimney removal.

Chimney Demolition Cost

For an average house that needs the chimney breast removed, you can expect to pay around $1,500 – $2,000. It’s a job that can take about two days.

You will also need to consider that your roof will need to be patched and possibly sections of your roof repaired once the chimney is demolished. For an average house, you can expect to pay an additional $1,500 – $2,000.

Well, removing a brick chimney is an intense job, if your confident that you can remove the stake safely and carry out the needed roof repairs, you could save yourself $3,000 to $4,000.
